The #ProjectScouted team behind the camera – Caroline Burne

Caroline Burne’s photography is larger than life. Just take a look at her images of the Top 5 from the Phase Eleven shoot in Cycle 1 of #ProjectScouted. After having set up, the location resembled a Hollywood movie set and the Top 5 ladies were the starring heroines. Currently working as a principle studio and freelance photographer, Caroline discovered her passion and flair for photography rather recently but has made serious headway and rapid progress. This year, Caroline promises to give the Top 10 girls the experience of a lifetime with a shoot that they will never forget.

Lee Folkard Photography: How did you discover your passion for photography?
Caroline: I only got into photography in my late twenties. My boyfriend was photographing the scene at the time and I was instantly drawn to it.  I bought a Nikon D60 and started shooting social pics at night clubs. And then, only two months later I sold my little D60 and upgraded to a D300. I haven’t looked back or questioned my choice in this field since. Apart from learning about the industry and the technicalities of photography on my own, I also felt it was important that I learnt the fundamentals of the art in order to better equip myself. So I went to Vega School of Brand Leadership and completed a year of studies, after which I began working for a studio.

LFP: What do you love most about photographing people?
Caroline: The aspect that I love the most about photographing people is that moment when a client who insists they aren’t photogenic or is very shy comes out of their shell in front of the camera or sees themselves in a way they haven’t seen themselves before. In that moment, you can see a genuine happiness because you have shown them something about themselves that they may have been longing to see. They hold their heads a little higher and walk with more confidence than they did before.  That’s always a good moment for me as an artist.

LFP: Is there anyone that you dream of shooting?
Caroline: I would love to shoot Bjork! I’m a big dreamer! I just feel that she knows how to take risks and bring the dramatic to everything she does, which really appeals to me.

LFP: For you, what makes a beautiful photograph?
Caroline: I find it really hard to say what makes a photograph beautiful. But I think it’s just that feeling you get when you’re looking at an image, whether it’s the mystery of a black and white cityscape or the allure of a secret hidden in a subtle smile or just a soft glow emanating from the image. I think that a beautiful image is one that manages to evoke an emotion.

LFP: Having been a part of #ProjectScouted last year, what made you want to return to Cycle 2 this year?
Caroline: Last cycle I met some really amazing people with awesome skills and talents. I was fortunate enough to work with the beautiful Charelle McAllister and what Charelle can do with a make-up brush is nothing less than pure perfection. I love that the Project presents the opportunity to network with people who are experts in their fields and also the chance to work with them. When you get that opportunity to meet and work with new people, especially in this industry, you take it!

LFP: Any tips for the #ProjectScouted girls who you will be shooting?
Caroline: My advice to the girls would be that they should not just rely on being ‘a pretty face’. You need to bring character and personality to each one of your images because you never know which shot is going to be that perfect one. Practice your angles and posing before the shoot if you can – elongate your neck, always pose with tension, and don’t stay in the same pose. Always mix it up, keep moving, take chances, and be innovative!

LFP: It’s going to be difficult to better on your shoot from last year. Are you willing to share any info about the phase you are shooting?
Caroline: I’ll just say that this year it’s all about the glam!

This is the point in the Project when there is no room for complacency from the girls as we are down to our Top 10, with 11 having been eliminated after the Shoelaced Clothing fashion show last week. Inspired by the pioneer photographer, Ansel Adams and his words, “You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, and the people you have loved,” Caroline brings depth and poignancy to her work. This phase is going to be the most demanding yet because we know that Caroline will be pulling out all the stops.

1.How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?
I'd be 40 years old because they say that life begins at 40!By this time you've already accomplished most milestones in your life and whatever comes after that is always a added bonus!

2.If happiness was the national currency, what kind of work would make you rich?
Being able to help the poor and the less fortunate, giving back always makes one grateful for what they have. You can feed 10 people with one plate of food but you cant feed one person with 10 plates of food!

3.If you could offer a newborn child only one piece of advice, what would it be?

Innocence. Dont rush being a child, you only have one childhood!

4.What’s something you know you do differently than most people?
My poise and my humility!
5.What are you most grateful for?
Im most grateful for my life, the opportunities i've been given.,the lessons i've learnt, the advise i have to take and my family and friends!

6.Would you be willing to reduce your life expectancy by 10 years to become extremely attractive or famous?
No! "beauty fades"

10.Why should you win Project Exposure?

I should win the competition because when i do something i put my all into it and try to do it perfectly the first time round.Simplicity is my forte but im always willing to go the extra mile.As a model, great exposure is always necessary and this is one way of getting that!Being able to be dressed by the designers will give them a platform and allow oblivious people who dont know who and what they are through me.Im a lady who has a vision,i try to have reason in the things i do.A lady with a plan and with every plan a purpose!

Natalie Buitendach : Project Exposure Q&A

1.How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?
21, i think that 21 is the perfect age to be in life, its the age of full responsibility and adult hood, its where your life begins, some people feel that responsibility isn't for them but i see it differently.

2.If happiness was the national currency, what kind of work would make you rich?
Interior design/decorating, i absolutely love designing and decorating a house and making it a home, or a lunch table with a few girlfriends over.

3.If you could offer a newborn child only one piece of advice, what would it be?

Live life with no regrets

4.What’s something you know you do differently than most people?
The way i dress, most people have a certain style and they stick to it, then theres me, i can wear my hair blonde red or brunette and people still say wow your hair style/color suits you,
one day im miss sporty and the next very elegant and chic, i love being around people and showing that i can be who i want to be, once again living life with no regrets.

5.What are you most grateful for?
My charity business,, being able to help people who truly need help.

6.Would you be willing to reduce your life expectancy by 10 years to become extremely attractive or famous?
NO, theres more to life than being extremely attractive or famous

7.What do you do in life?
In life i strive to do my best in everything i do,, what i do in life is setting goals and reaching them no matter what gets me down, because you have to be down to get up again...

8.What did you enjoy most about your Top 10 shoot?
Having a photographer just be the camera, that was the best part, posing and having fun with the sound of the camera klicking away.

9.Which is your favourite part of the winning prize?
The birthday party being covered by lee folkard,, my idea of making memories is by taking pictures,, i take a picture everyday of my life of my family my loved one or my animals,, and so by lee taking photographs of my birthday party would mean making more memories.

10.Why should you win Project Exposure?

Project exposure is not just a competition to me, its an opportunity for me to experience more things in life and also to see who is out there and the different looks all of us can produce,, we chose our own themes that meant something significant to us and so we interrupted it to our characters, i have produced many different looks with different photographers and they are all so different, i am able to produce a different look every time, the task given to us by lee folkard was that he was only going to BE THE CAMERA,, and not in any way help us with the shoot, that way we were able to show off our skills and whether we interpreted the theme or weren't able to, and thats why i think i should win project exposure.

Project One [ Group Shots with the Top 10 ]

Follow my blog with Bloglovin

So yesterday I had the Top 10 Shoot with the Project One girls.
At 07:00 girls started arriving. I got to watch the sun rise - which is something I never tire of seeing.

A few shots of each girl were taken - with intent of using them to upload onto the Photography Page for Phase 2 of voting. Prior to this people were voting on pictures submitted by the entrants.

Each girl will get one image uploaded this evening at 17:00 and they will remain up for 7 days. At the end the girl with the most votes will take the prize!

I wanted to take a group picture of the top 10 girls to add to the original logo that i had made for the Project.
My inspiration came from one of my favourite tv shows - Lost. See below - I was pleased with result.

The shoot went well and it was great to meet ten beautiful people.

After the mandatory pictures - a few group shots were taken. See below:

What do you think? Awesome bunch aren't they? Anyways - They need your VOTE :)
See: Lee Folkard Photography Page for more details!

Some of the girls stayed after the shoot wrapped up and we took a few more fun shots. I will upload some at a later stage.
