The Design Indaba conference, taking place in Cape Town from 21-23 February 2018, will go beyond design to create a multi-sensory event where you can hear, see, learn and experience the future of creative thinking and design activism. Awarded as the Best Conference in the World, Design Indaba aims to make a positive impact on society by building a movement that attracts producers of meaningful culture and business, regardless of sector or industry.

The 3-day Durban Simulcast event offers the Design Indaba experience to those unable to attend the full event in Cape Town. Catering to emerging designers, students and young professionals, this live-broadcast is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to hear from speakers including designer Morag Myerscough and poet Lebo Mashile, and to be part of the DI magic.

Confirmed speakers of the substantial 2018 panel include celebrated and prolific spatial designer Morag Myerscough, who most recently reimagined the interior of the Bernie Grant Arts Centre cafe in London; Zietz Mocca designer Thomas Heatherwick; Dutch landscape architect Peter Veenstra, co-founder of LOLA Architects, who created the Adidas Campus headquarters in Germany and is bringing his structural genius to the Design Indaba stage; famed product designer Tom Dixon OBE; and Es Devlin who is known for creating kinetic stage sculptures in collaboration with artists including Kanye West and Beyoncé, as well as installations at the Victoria & Albert Museum and Art Basel and the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony.

Hosted this year at The Plant Venue Co. in Durban's prominent Station Drive Precinct, the event promises to amaze, uplift and motivate delegates to find new ways in which to design a better world.

Rémy Martin - One Life/Live Them

"You only get one life, live them."

On the 30th of March, Rémy Martin hosted an event at the Oyster Box in Durban. 

Rémy Martin's One Life.Live Them campaign was launched in October last year. I was fortunate to photograph their Legends event in December last year held at Moyo on the Pier. 
We were then treated to a night with living music legend, Vusi Mahlasela.

Naturally I then inquired about the campaign and was very keen to be involved in their upcoming events.

The event held at the Oyster Box was geared towards the entrepreneurs and leaders. Two of the campaign ambassadors were brought in to chat about their life and experiences thus far.  
The two speakers were informative and embodied the brand and the current campaign. 
Mayihlome Tshwete and Ludwick Marishane both ground-breakers in the respective paths who live their different lives.

This international campaign recognizes and celebrates individuals multi-talents, by understanding that people are not defined by one talent or skill, but are multi-faceted, with many passions.

Larisa Terblanche of Larisa MODA, moda translating to fashion or in style in Spanish, is a truly inspirational woman. Balancing her family, being a wonderful mother to two little girls, and running a business has become second nature for Larisa. 1.    How did you first get involved in #ProjectScouted?

I was invited by founder of #ProjectScouted, Lee Folkard, to be a part of Project Trinity in 2013. The #ProjectScouted girls also modelled my garments for the underwater shoot shot by Roy Esterhuysen last year.

2.    Having been a sponsor for last year’s Project, what made you want to be a part of it again this year?

I enjoyed working with Lee and the #ProjectScouted team on the previous Project and I was delighted to be invited again.

3.    What do you love most about the Project?

I love meeting new people and getting the opportunity of having my clothing featured in such unique and unusual shoots which is often quite rare for Durban.

4.    How did you find your passion for designing and creating clothing?

I started to create clothes for myself from a very young age and it was a natural decision to study Fashion Design after I finished school. I have always loved beautiful things, even though I didn’t come from a very well-to-do family. I even designed and made my matric dance dress. Ever since then, I have never regretted choosing this career.

5.    What was the very first thing you designed and made?

I made outfits for my dolls!

6.    What is the most rewarding aspect of your work?

I enjoy the actual process of making garments and the greatest reward is to see Larisa MODA creations living a beautiful life; going to special events and even travelling the world. I feel like my garments have a life of their own after I have created them and handed them over to my clients.

7.    What is the best aspect of being a designer based in Durban?

The weather! The weather is always changing but is always fashion-friendly. I love that!

8.    Are you willing to share any info about your phase in the Project?

My phase will be closer to the end of the Project. I will still be having a coffee date with Lee to discuss the details. Thereafter the theme of my phase will be announced. But it is definitely going to be even bigger than the underwater shoot last year.

The exceptional #ProjectScouted judges – Azhar Suleman, the model on a mission

Twenty-two-year-old Azhar Suleman has achieved more than most at his age and has taken the Cape Town modelling scene by storm with his fresh face and strong work ethic. Having moved to Cape Town only almost a year ago, this Durban boy has made many inroads in the industry and understands what it takes to make a success of oneself in front of the camera. The second of the three judges to be revealed, Azhar, who works as a full-time model, has an evident passion for the industry that he will be bringing to the #ProjectScouted official judging panel.

Lee Folkard Photography: So many guys and girls dream of working as a model on a daily basis. What is it like working as a full-time model?

Azhar: It's interesting, every day is a new experience, meeting new people and sharing different stories. But of course, it isn’t all glamour all the time. It is very hard work and you get out what you put in!

LFP: How did you become a model? Was it something you always wanted to do?

Azhar: Modelling actually came as a surprise to me. I was always an introvert and very self-conscious so when I eventually found myself in the industry by chance, I was quite surprised. But now that I am here, I can’t imagine doing anything else.

LFP: Have you always lived in Cape Town? What is it like living in the city?

Azhar: I haven’t always lived in Cape Town. I'm originally from Durban and only moved up to Cape Town in April 2014. It goes without saying that Cape Town is a beautiful city. It’s filled with beautiful places to see and people to meet. There's always something new and different to do. And the food is also just incredible!

LFP: What has been your proudest moment as a model?

Azhar: I wouldn't say there's a specific moment that I'm proud of. But I do still get really excited when I see myself in a magazine! I don't think that that feeling could ever change!

LFP: What do you think is the secret behind a good photo?

Azhar: Team work. A model has to portray the imagination of the client and photographer.  The end-product may not look good to some, but it is important to always give the client what they want.

LFP: What is the most important thing you have learnt in your modelling career, be it about your profession or about life?

Azhar: I've learnt that no matter how many compliments or negativity you get from others; always stay true to who you are and remain grounded. And this applies to working as a model and also everyday life.

LFP: Any advice to the aspiring models that are participating in the Project?

Azhar: Confidence is your strongest weapon; always believe in yourself.

LFP: How did you hear about #ProjectScouted and what motivated you to agree to being a judge?

Azhar: When Lee asked me to join the panel of judges, I didn’t think twice. It’s so exciting to be a part of something so brilliant happening in my hometown. And #ProjectScouted is trending on all the social media at the moment, so how could I not have heard about it?

LFP: Are you willing to share some of the criteria you will be basing your judging on?

Azhar: Hmm... I think I’d like to keep those criteria a little secret.

Azhar’s motto “Dream as if you will live forever, live as if you will die today” is one he bases his life on; he knows the value of every moment and of also carving one’s legacy. Perhaps this is a principle the #ProjectScouted ladies can also adopt along the way. #ProjectScouted kickflips into Phase Two

"Skateboarding teaches you how to take a fall properly. If you try to kickflip down some stairs, it might take you thirty tries - but you just learn how to take a tumble without getting hurt."

If you don't know that it’s there, you may stumble upon the Skate Park on the Durban Beach Front as if it were a desert oasis. But of course, the breathtaking Indian Ocean is only a few meters away making the Skate Park a perfect addition to the beachfront's attractions. This was our location for Phase Two of #ProjectScouted, where our ladies arrived in their all-black attire ready to make an impact. Even on a Sunday morning, the Skate Park was abuzz with activity; making it a perfect #ProjectScouted venue. Nilufer Yucel, our stunning Turk and Phase Two photographer, aimed to capture the essence of the skateboarding lifestyle during her shoot. Along with her brother, Yashar Yucel, also a photography enthusiast, assisting her and shooting some photos himself which can be seen on his Facebook photography page – Golden Spider Photography – Nilufer aimed to encompass the daring and intense aspects of the action sports practiced at the Skate Park.

Being quite a demanding first Project shoot to be shot by one of the official photographers, the girls had to put their best foot forward as only 40 ladies will be going through to Phase Three. This may seem like an intimidating number but it is also a portrayal of the gravity of the Project. Along the way the girls will learn to be able to handle difficult shoots, sometimes harsh weather conditions like the blistering sun on Sunday morning, and the often ferocious nature of the industry. Yet despite the girls being so focused on their goals for the Project, it was obvious that everyone present had an awesome time. Even the parents who accompanied their daughters were captivated by the talent showcased at the Skate Park – that of their daughters and the skateboarders.

The amazing #ProjectScouted ladies did not miss a beat. With the expert guidance of professional model, Iman Sheik, who will be mentoring the girls throughout their Project journey, along with some of the dedicated and motivated scouts, made sure the girls channelled their edgy and fierce personas to the best of their ability. With the Skate Park as their set, the girls had the freedom to experiment with their posing making for some extremely interesting and unique shots. Our #ProjectScouted videographers, Tayla-Rae Coetzer and Stefan Rust, were also in their element capturing the energy of the shoot and the park – the video of which will soon be shared on the Lee Folkard Photography page – along with the photographers who shot the behind-the-scenes action, all of which will have their awesome work shared on the Facebook page.

Proving their devotion to and love of the Project, scout and graphic designer, Helen Borg, and participant, Jamie De Bruine, even attended the phase on their birthday! The Project could never be possible without the aid of many hands; assisting in ways big and small, or even just dropping by shoots, making the Project the spectacular experience that it is. This is what #ProjectScouted is all about; an experience invested in by inspired people who aim to inspire.

Phase Three is already approaching next weekend and we want to see you there. You don’t want to miss out on this. The #ProjectScouted ladies are just getting warmed up, learning the tricks of the trade that will keep them producing excellent work. And as Bam Margera would put it; even if they take a fall, they will only come back stronger and hungrier.

The Brissett Brothers - Durban's Infamous Identical Twins to be a part of Phase Twelve

Chad and Keelan Brissett are probably the most well-known identical twins in Durban. Their modelling career has rocketed in just a few short years and this is no doubt thanks to their relationship with one another that has evolved into the #BrissettTwins brand.

            We got to know the brothers ahead of the #ProjectScouted Phase Twelve shoot where the twins will be posing with our Top 5 beauties in the "Day of the Dead" concept shoot shot by Jerome Stoffels.

            Lee Folkard Photography: Who is Chad Brissett without his twin brother?

            Chad: Chad Brissett is a young career-driven guy who enjoys the world of fashion as well as nature and all things beautiful. He is someone who enjoys all spheres of life and enjoys experiencing new things that he isn’t accustomed too.

            Lee Folkard Photography: Who is Keelan Brissett wirhout his twin brother?

            Keelan: Well,  I'd say that I'm a very driven person who loves to keep busy and excel in everything that I do. I really love fashion and not just because I model but I just want to feel good all the time and quality clothing does it for me. I'm generally a very chilled, laid-back guy but I do have a wild, fun side which comes out every so often.

            LFP: What do you think about the "Day of the Dead" concept for the #ProjectScouted Top 5 shoot?

            Chad: I personally am a guy who enjoys more of the happy, fun style of shooting which is complete opposite to this shoot. But I believe it’s awesome to broaden your horizons so I think the shoot will be really fun and it’s always nice to try something different.

            LFP: How did you become involved in the #ProjectScouted Top 5 shoot?

            Keelan: #ProjectScouted has been trending everywhere and luckily enough I've had the privilege to meet and spend time with the talented Lee Folkard. I've seen him at all the big events and he is often with many friends that I know so it was bound to happen that we’d work together. I'm very happy to be able to take part in #ProjectScouted, it’s also an ego-booster to have Lee Folkard want to work with us.

            LFP: What's it like being an identical twin?

            Chad: It’s honestly the most amazing thing ever! People always say there’s nothing like a mother’s love for her child but I would say a twin's love is beyond the boundaries of love; it’s a connection that is unbreakable. My twin brother is my best friend, barber, stylist, psychologist, etc.

            LFP: What's the worst thing about being an identical twin?

       Keelan: In all honesty, there's not much I dislike about being a twin but the worst thing I'd say is if there's something available and there's only one of it, then Chad and I would have to fight over it which tends to happen more than I'd like.

            LFP: How did you form your own identity when you have an identical twin?

            Chad: It’s quite hard for us as we are both so closely linked. But we do have different personalities as much as they are similar and I think once people have taken the initiative to get to know us they will realize we are different and do portray our own identities.

            LFP: Do you think that you and your brother will be able to carry the #BrissettTwins brand forward until you're much older?

            Keelan: I really do believe we will, we’ve just started building the #BrissettTwins brand and we have so many ideas and goals we want to achieve and that means pushing it through even until we’re older. The brand and name can never disappear as long as we’re alive so I'm almost certain we’d find away to get the #BrissettTwins trending through the ages

            LFP: How did you begin modelling and how did the decision happen to market you and your brother as the #BrissettTwins?

            Chad: We started modeling about 3 years ago which we really loved. We created a strong bond with our former agent who helped catapult our career in the modeling world. We basically realized that us together was not just a team, but that we are a label which can be used to be marketed to the world. And people seem to be loving it so far!

            LFP: Is there any jealousy or sibling rivalry between you two?

       Keelan: We don’t have jealousy or rivalry at all actually, we are however competitive with each other and want to beat each other when it comes to sport to campus marks, etc. This competitive nature is actually good because it keeps us pushing at a high intensity and grows us as people together.

            LFP: How are you and your brother different?

            Chad:  We are really not so different at all. I would say in terms of physical attributes, I am a bit taller and I have a beauty spot on my nose. But in other aspects I would say he is more of a neat freak as opposed to myself.

            LFP: Have you guys ever pulled a prank on someone or fooled someone?

            Keelan: Many times, but more so in our younger days. I remember we pulled an infamous twin-prank on a girl where we swapped clothes and she had no idea. The details I would have to share in person, though.

            LFP: What's the funniest/weirdest thing that has ever happened to you guys because you're twins?

            Chad: Well, we had exams and we wrote for each other before and it was awesome as we could study for one test less. Also when we get stopped by the police while driving, we sometimes use each other's license. (LFP: These guys definitely have a naughty streak!)

            LFP: What do you want the world to remember about you?

       Keelan: My humble nature and respect I have for all people.

            LFP: What's the one thing you want people to know about you?

            Chad: I'm just a really humble guy.

            There is no doubt that these guys, combined with our beautiful Top 5 models and Jerome's photography skills, are going to make our Phase Twelve shoot all the more memorable as #ProjectScouted draws to a close.
